Behind The Name

One question I get all the time is, Alchemy Atelier what does that mean???

Which probably suggests that it's not the best business name! HA! But, hey, it's me. So, I thought I would share what's behind the name, "Alchemy Atelier." Rest assured, I didn't choose it at random. I apologize for the long-winded and boring presentation of my case for this name. Bear with me.

ALCHEMY al·che·my /ˈalkəmē/ noun
the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir. modern usage: a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.

As a photographer, I have always understood and felt a connection to this term because in a very real way, we are chemist and physicists, particularly those who implore historical processes of capturing, developing and printing their images.

Upon further research of the subject of alchemy, I found that many early female alchemists were also botanists. This made my heart sing. Not only does this word relate to one mode of creation for me, but two: photography & floristry. And if search a bit deeper, the idea of transformation, creation, and the combination of elements reflects the many disciplines that I have brought together under one name.

ATELIER at·el·ier /ˌadlˈyā/ noun
a workshop or studio, especially one used by an artist or designer.

If you know me at all, you know that I am a Francophile and have an affinity for the french language, way of life, and general attitude. Secondly, I wanted to find a term that suggested a studio or workspace rather than a brick & mortar shop/business. Atelier brings to mind a dress maker or artisan which appeals to me.

And, not to mention the alliteration, which makes my nerdy brain tingle!

Here's what all this means. I care deeply about the work and thoughts that I put out into the world. As a brand I hope it will serve as a marker for everything that I produce, as well as a symbol of intentional and thoughtful artistic expression.
